The Amazon Kindle appears to be the current hot “must have” gizmo on the market right now. It seems very much as if the ebook reader is an idea whose moment has arrived – and the kindle ebook reader is clearly the finest example of such a device on the market at the moment. It is also, and let’s be frank about it here, cool.
The Kindle has frequently been compared to the Apple iPod - which, incidentally, now has a kindle application that permits you to read kindle books on it – by a number of industry insiders. In fact, going all the way back to the launch of the first Kindle in November of 2007, Steven Levy’s Newsweek cover article suggested that the Kindle was the “… iPod of reading”. Two and a half years down the line it appears that drawing parallels between the two devices might go some way towards explaining the current enormous success of the Kindle – and perhaps even allow some insight into what might occur in the near future.
Amazon supremo Jeff Bezos is quoted as saying, again way back in 2007, that “This [the Kindle] isn’t a device, it’s a service.” - and that is absolutely fundamental to understanding why the Kindle works so perfectly in Amazon’s business model.
Some criticisms have been levied at the Kindle’s high price – it currently sells at $359 for the Kindle 2, slightly lower than the original Kindle price of $399. The original iPod was priced at $399 when it was released – prices have fallen as the product was first accepted, and then passed through mainstream to practically ubiquitous. At the same time functionality has risen.
Apple is, and has been for some time now, synonymous with music downloads and has increased the available portfolio of products to include videos, games and a plethora of ”apps” for the iPod. In a similar way, Amazon is strongly associated with books, making the kindle an ideal choice of product for them. The recent announcement of the larger Kindle DX is very significant, not simply because of the various technical upgrades that it boasts, but because it improves Amazon’s capability to provide newspapers, magazines and also educational textbooks to its consumers.
It would be unwise to downplay the technical aspects of the Kindle series of readers completely of course, but it appears that, for Amazon, the technology is a means to an end rather than the end itself. In fact, as far as e-book reader technology goes, Amazon are pretty late to the party when you consider that there have been earlier contenders - for example; the Franklin ebook (no longer being developed but still available from some sources) kicking around since 1999, and Sony have been marketing ebook readers for quite a time. There are other examples, some have already vanished, others are soldiering on without, currently at least, gaining anything like the amount of interest generated by the Kindle.
One more key advantage enjoyed by Amazon at the moment is the 3G wireless technology utilised to enable Kindle users to download their ebooks in less than 60 seconds without the need for a computer or a broadband connection – and without being locked in to a monthly contract or having to furnish a download fee. It’s a perfect example of the way Amazon have [leveraged the technology to provide a perceived benefit for their user base.
No monthly connection fee and no download charges means that customers do not feel locked in or committed to the Amazon service, a significant factor bearing in mind the relatively high selling price and the current economic climate. Of course, whilst customers will be able to procure ebooks elsewhere for use with their Kindle, it is still going to be much easier for them to purchase from Amazon’s large, and ever increasing, selection of Kindle friendly books. Amazon are going towill see a just as Apple do with their iTunes store.
Using the iPod experience to predict the Kindle’s possible future, it seems improbable that the Kindle will have everything its own way. As previously stated, there are already a number of existing alternative ebook devices on the market – the Sony PRS is probably the most significant player apart from the Kindle right now, but there are others. These will either develop and provide strong competition for the Kindle or disappear from the marketplace.
Also worth remembering is the fact that there are a number of new readers in development. Plastic Logic, has a Kindle DX sized reader in development which has been scheduled for release in 2010. Rumours abound relating to the launch of an Apple tablet based notebook, thought to be aimed at the gap between an iPod Touch and a full level MacBook. It wouldn’t be too fanciful to imagine that Apple might enhance their iStore to include ebooks just as they expanded it to include videos following the release of the iPhone and iPod Touch.
And it’s not just tougher competition based on improved reader technology that Amazon may have to face. In March of 2009 Google and Sony announced that Google’s giant library of public domain e-books would be made available for free for Sony’s reader. That’s a total of 600,000 titles and is a definite signal that the ebook reader market going to be fiercely contested in future.
At this time Amazon is in the driving seat. It has a huge and, most important of all – the Amazon Kindle is cool. Whether or not it grows into a ubiquitous iPod type product or not in the face of what will surely be strong competition only time will tell. Amazon have been more than smart so far, so it seems probable that they will be a major player in this emerging market for a long time to come.
One thing seems certain, we will all have the option to read books, magazines, newspapers and even college textbooks using portable digital devices in the immediate future. As competition, economies of scale and improvements in technology combine to drive prices lower this will become an increasingly popular choice for many, possibly even a majority of, readers. The way we read is set to change, possibly more quickly than you might think.

Protecting your computer and its security while you move can be one of your highest priorities, but can also prove one of the most difficult. If the packing shifts during transport, there is a higher chance that your equipment could get damaged,which could result in losing anything you have saved on the hard drive. Do not leave any items in your automobile if you will be transporting it with a car transport company.
If you use national movers, they will use special equipment or even special trucks, in the cases of full office moves, to move your computer equipment with extreme care. A company will do what it can to keep you happy. Since they do this on a full time bases, it is pretty safe to believe your belongings will arrive without incident. Accidents can still happen, no matter how many precautions you take.
In the rare case that something does happen to your computer during a move, you should take care and always have a backup of all of your computer files. Keep the backup disks with you, this way you know he information is safe. If there is damage done to your computer, you will still have your information saved on disk that you can then put onto a new one. Make sure to get the insurance information in writing before you allow the company to move the first item from your old house.If you can get any insurance information before you let them begin, there will be few surprises later.
With these tips, you’ll find that moving your computer and equipment doesn’t have to be a hassle. With the right preparation and planning your move can be easy and stress-free. The original Amazon kindle ebook reader launched in November 2007. It sold out in under six hours and remained out of stock until April 2008. It’s probably fair to say that even Amazon was surprised by the immediate success of the device.
The new kindle 2 was launched in late February of 2009 and it was widely considered to be a significant improvement on what was an already successful product. Among other improvements it boasted a better battery life, more rapid page turns, a text-to-speech facility (it reads text to you) and sufficient storage for around 1500 books in its on board memory (albeit that the facility to use an external SD card, a feature of the original kindle, was no longer available).
Just 3 months later, in May of 2009, Amazon announced that its kindle DX would be launching in the summer of this year. The DX features the majority of the major features of the kindle 2 but has a larger 9.7” display, which incorporates automatic rotation between portrait and landscape mode. Also available, for the first time in the kindle range, is the ability to read native pdf files without the necessity for conversion.
The extra size of the kindle DX makes it ideally suited for reading newspapers, magazines and academic coursebooks. A number of major newspapers announced – even before the DX went on sale – that they would offer reduced prices for the kindle for signing up to long term subscriptions.
Amazon are keeping their cards very close to their chest – but it’s thought that in the region of between $86 to $96 million of kindle reader sales were generated between November 2007 and August 2008. Remember, that’s only the electronic device – the sales of electronic books need to be accounted for separately. Industry analysts are predicting that kindle sales (again just the reader) will reach $ 1.6 billion by 2012.
Good business for Amazon – and a significant move away from only marketing other supplier’s goods to having their own product to bring to market. More importantly though, whilst not exactly tied in, kindle users will be heavily motivated to provide Amazon with a level of repeat sales that other online shopping websites can only dream of.
